Kiltcorner Newsletter September 2008

Message from the Director…
Yeah! It’s marching band time again! I certainly love this time of year because it brings lots of teaching opportunities and togetherness amongst both students and parents. We all seemingly have a similar goal that we are striving for with every single step on the field, or with every single planned event and fundraiser that is implemented—to have a competitive marching band, with a successful season and having tons of fun along the way. Yes, the sweat is a little much, and the time requirement seems endless, but the feeling of a GREAT performance makes it all worth while. Students should hold to these thoughts while the parents are striving and holding to the thoughts that every effort they make helps fund what we as music educators, parents, and a community feel is so important. It’s MARCHING BAND! By the time you have received this letter, we have hopefully completed a successful first performance at the TJ Sampson Bowl, and we are tirelessly preparing for a competition at Caverna High School on September 6th. Please make every effort to be at these contests. It is so uplifting as a performer to look up into the stands and see a massive amount of Scottie Blue “Cheering” you on! Let’s give the students something to be excited about.
Other upcoming events are the South Central Kentucky Marching Band Classic here at Glasgow High School on September 13th, and the Band Booster Meeting on Thursday, September 4th at 7:00PM. Please be sure to attend this meeting as we will be discussing both the Band Classic and the trip that we are taking at the end of the year. We are looking to finalize the trip as soon as we possibly can so that we can begin paying for it. I think it would be absolutely great if we could get a full house for this September meeting. I hope to see you there. And FYI—I hope that you are signing those practice records!!
Musically,

From the Presidents Elect:
President – elect – Carl & Kellye Bishop
President Elect/Fundraising Chairs – Carl and Kellye Bishop
Hello again from your President Elects/Fundraising Chairs, Carl and Kellye Bishop. The first couple weeks of school have gotten off to a great start! I
am AMAZED at how DEDICATED our band students truly are as they continue to rehearse the contest show. It will only be a few more days, and we will be able to see them in uniform on the field at the T.J. Samson Bowl at BCHS on Saturday, August 30th. I get cold chills when I think about it!
It will be an evening you will not want to miss! Please continue to SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE your children. They are some of the best students that GHS has to offer. Some upcoming fundraising events that you will need to know about are as follows:

SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY MARCHING BAND CLASSIC BAND CONTEST
This event will be held on Saturday, September 13th on the GHS football field. This contest is expected to be bigger and better than last year’s. Chairs, Will and Delana Webb, have been working diligently conducting meetings concerning this event. Several committee chairs have already been appointed. You may contact either Will or Delana to see which committees may still need additional help. This is a major fundraiser for the band, and It takes everyone’s participation. Thanks for volunteering, and I can’t wait to see you there.

PROGRAM AD SALES FOR BAND CONTEST
The program ad sale is another major fundraiser that is a part of the band contest. This committee has been meeting weekly for the last two to three weeks selling and compiling ads for our contest program. The committee will meet again next Tuesday, August 26th from 6:30 to 8:00 in the band room and possibly one more Tuesday night on September 2nd at the same time and place. Hopefully the program will be proofread the week of September 1st and printed the week of September 8th. I would like to issue a special thank you to the members of this committee as they have been a TREMENDOUS help to me. There is no way I could have accomplished this major task without you. You guys are AWESOME!

BAND CARD SALES
Band card sales will continue thru September 30th for students to win those wonderful cash prizes! Please continue to sell these and turn in your money to get more cards. If you have money to turn in to me, either leave it in the box in Mr. Bond’s office or catch me at band practice on Tuesday nights. If you are a GMS student you can turn your money to me at school.

SCOTTIE BAND NIGHT AT ZAXBYS
I have contacted Zaxbys and am working with them on scheduling a Scottie Band Night. The date has not been set yet so be looking for that information in the near future. Zaxbys will give back to the band 10% of their total sales from all customers between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 once the date has been set. Flyers will be given to band students in advance to help us advertise for this event. More information will be coming soon.

ROLLER COASTER YARD SALE
This fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, October 4th in the GHS parking lot. We will be having a huge yard sale with concessions being served. This day will be here before you know it so be thinking about getting those closets and garages cleaned out. All proceeds raised that day will go back to support the band. Thanks in advance for your donation!

KRISPY KREME DONUT SALES
Scheduled to begin October 13th. Be thinking about how you can help with this fundraising event and what businesses would like to have donuts delivered to them on this day. Planning ahead makes a big difference in the amount of money we can raise!

FRUIT SALES
Last but not least, the wonderful fruit sales will begin sometime around the end of October and run through November. I had more response to this fundraiser last year than any other. Customers like to have fruit for the holidays so be making a list in advance of who you can contact to sell fruit to this again year.

FUNDRAISER COMMITTEE MEETING
There will fundraiser committee meeting on Tuesday, September 16th from 6:00 to 8:00 in the band room. The main purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the upcoming fundraising events for October. Specifically the Roller Coaster Yard Sale and the Krispy Kreme Donut Sales and possibly the Zaxbys night and Fruit Sales.

THAT’S ALL FOR NOW!
